Народився 1923-го року на Кубі у родині агронома та біологині. Дитячі роки минули в Італії, на Санремо. 1941-го року за порадою батька вступив до Туринського університету на агрономічний факультет, але через два роки перервав навчання та вступив до лав гарібальдійських бригад (партизанські загони).
Після закінчення Другої світової переїхав до Турину та працював у часописах, продовжив навчання, але вже за філологічною спеціальністю (закінчив виш 1947-го). Дебютною книгою молодого письменника стала частково автобіографічна повість «Il sentiero dei nidi di ragno».
Писав у стилі неореалізм, пізніше — фантастичні романи, а також твори для дітей. 1964-го одружився з перекладачкою з Аргентини Естер Зінгер. Подорожує світом, відвідує Париж, Нью-Йорк, Рим, зацікавлюється космологією та соціологією, семіотикою, що вплинуло на подальшу літературну творчість автора: виходять друком книги «Il castello dei destini incrociati» (1969), «Se una notte d' inverno un viaggiatore» (1979).
Українською мовою у «Видавництві Старого Лева» перекладено та опубліковано твір «Якщо подорожній одної зимової ночі» (2018) — химерний та складний за будовою роман, присвячений значенню та ролі літератури у житті людини та особливостям індивідуального сприйняття книги окремим читачем.
