Народилася 31 липня 1965 р в Англії . Батько був інженером-авіатором на заводі Rolls Royce в Бристолі, а мати науковий співробітник у відділі хімії Wyedean Comprehensive. Джоан написала свою першу книжку в шість років - оповідання про кролика. В 11 написала свій перший роман.
