Народився неподалік від Лондона. Любов до літератури з’явилася ще з дитинства: майбутній письменник дуже полюбляв читати популярних в ті часи авторів пригодницьких творів – Генрі Філдінга та Тобіаса Смоллетта. У Діккенса від народження була надзвичайно гарна пам'ять, яка дуже допомагала йому в житті та кар’єрі письменника.
Був вимушений працювати ще замолоду через батьківську заборгованість. Перші роботи були дуже важкі, з нестерпними умовами, і заробленого ледь вистачало на їжу. Згодом цей досвід червоною ниткою протягнеться через всі твори Діккенса.
Окрім роботи майбутній письменник встигав відвідувати школу. Після її закінчення влаштувався на роботу в адвокатську контору, а потім став репортером-фрілансером.
Публікував репортажі, звіти та фейлетони у різних журналах та газетах. З циклу фейлетонів виріс один з найвідоміших романів Діккенса – «Записки Піквікського клубу», а після твору «Пригоди Олівра Твіста» за Діккесом остаточно закріпилася слава знаного письменника.
До сьогодні одними з найвідоміших творів Чарльза Діккенса є «Різдвяна пісня в прозі», «Девід Коперфільд», «Великі сподівання».
